Good look into the future
Posted 12/28/2013 3:51:00 PM

For the first time this season, the Rutgers football team got a good look at what lies ahead when it enters the Big Ten next year.  The Scarlet Knights played the closest thing to a Big Ten program Saturday afternoon when it lost to 25th-ranked Notre Dame 29-16 in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, heard on the new talk radio, 1450 WCTC and WCTCAM.com, the Voice of Rutgers Football.  The 9-4 Fighting Irish are big on the offensive line and deep in the running back department...and put both forces to good work in the fourth quarter when they ran the ball at will against a worn-out Scarlet Knight defense, outscoring RU 13-3 in the final stanza en route to the win.  The Knights played with heart and clearly were in the game much of the way.  But head coach Kyle Flood and his coaching staff now fully realize that they have to get bigger on both sides of the ball...and have to acquire more talent to match the depth of Big Ten teams.  And that's what he, his assistants, players and all Rutgers fans come away with from an afternoon in the Bronx---a clear picture of what lies ahead in the prestigious Big Ten in 2014 and beyond.  The countdown now begins to the league opener on September 13th at home against Penn State.

Our worst fears have been realized. Somehow I knew going to the Big Ten was a bad idea. We should have tried to get into the ACC--we would have had the chance to meet up with teams where we could have been more competitive. Now we are in deep you-know-what and probably will be for quite a while.

Frankly, Bruce, I am more concerned for the competiveness of the men's basketball team than I am for football. I have seen nothing so far this season to indicate progress or potential for this patchwork team. I do believe there is talent. I've got my fingers crossed for something we can hang our hat on.

@Peter from Cliffwood Beach I do wonder which one of RU's sports teams will be the first one to show (and how soon will they be able to show it) that we are really ready to compete and eventually to win championships in the Big Ten. Any guesses??
