A classy move for a classy young man

Rutgers University has been criticized for many things over the years.  But the Scarlet Knight football program was right on the mark when it announced on Tuesday that it will retire the #52 worn by former player Eric LeGrand, who had his career cut short by a spinal injury.  It's the first time in the 144-year history of RU football that a uniform number has been retired.  And it couldn't be for a more classy individual.  LeGrand, the Avenel native and Colonia High School product, has been an inspiration to many throughout the world, thanks to social media, for the way he has handled himself since that devastating injury a couple of years ago during a game against Army at the Meadowlands.  LeGrand's 1,000-watt smile has belied his medical condition while he has set a goal of walking once again.  He regularly speaks to organizations about overcoming obstackles, and was presented the Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the ESPYS last year.  He also has become a member of the Rutgers Radio Network, heard on WCTC, he's written books and has had a major positive presence on Twitter.  Simply put, LeGrand has been an ambassader for Rutgers University and the Scarlet Knight football program.  For all of that, no one is more deserving of having his uniform number being retired than Eric LeGrand.  Congratulations Eric and best wishes on your road to recovery.
