Right man for the job...right now

Well played by Rutgers University.  In an attempt to drag the school out of the embarrassing depths of the Mike Rice basketball scandal, RU accomplished what it needed to do right now---restore credibility.  And, there's no better way to do it than to reach back into the Scarlet Knights' glorious past and hire the point guard from the 1976 Final Four team, Eddie Jordan.  To use a political phrase, the move will excite the older segment of the Rutgers' fan base and alumni and begin to move the school away from the Rice debacle.  Nationally, it also shows that RU officials were serious about the coaching aspect of the job by hiring the former head coach of three NBA franchises.  However, what remains to be seen if Jordan can get the job done over the long haul.  The last time he had to recruit high school players was in the early 1990's and he has to prove himself quickly with the move to the Big Ten in 2014.  For now, applaud the move; for the future, keep your fingers crossed.

Well said Bruce. I remember his era since my daughter attended RU at that time. The one problem I see is that his style may not excite some of the potential players. A few wins and that can change things. I see him as a no nonsense coach who doesn't have to prove himself. His accomplishments have ben huge, For many players there is life after college and NBA ball and Jordan is an example of that. Bruce, my fingers are crossed.

During my basketball career(?) I have had occasions to play in pick-up games where there would be the occasional borderline professional , college D-1 stars, high school all-staters - you get the drift. It was never fun when these professional wannabes would go beyond merely hogging the in an one-on-one style as if they were the only ones on the court. So one day in the RU Barn annex, nine guys needed a tenth. I was the tenth. The game was going on for about 5 minutes before I picked up this guy that looks like Eddie Jordan on a switch. Yes, it was Eddie, in 1976, no less. Point being, there was no ego, no all-star ball hogging. He was chillin' with hoops the way basketball is supposed to be played. Apparently, he was a good kid then, and the good person we need now. Rutgers has a track record for wrong decisions. Not this time. Good luck, Fast Eddie!

Three guys RU cannot afford to lose: Mack, Judge, and Jack. As far as I can tell, they're still here. Can't fault Poole for Iona. This is his "out". He'll start and be a star there. Carter is making a mistake. Rosario sat but eventually learned Donovan's system to perfection. Carter is not as talented as Rosario. May not play at all. I'll drive Seagears to the airport. Kone? Bloomfield College, perhaps.
