Good riddance to the Rutgers women's basketball season
Posted 3/9/2013 4:50:00 PM

If there was any more need for evidence that this was one of the worst seasons in Vivian Stringer's 18-year tenure as head coach of the women's basketball program, then this week in Hartford, Connecticut provided it.  To begin with, when the Big East began handing out its individual post-season awards on Thursday, no Scarlet Knights were on All-League First Team...no Scarlet Knights were on All-League Second Team...and only one was on the Honorable Mention list (senior guard Erica Wheeler) and one of the All-Freshman Team (guard Kahleah Copper.)  That's only two RU players listed among the top 38 in the Big East.  Not very good for a team laden with McDonald's All-Americans and all-staters.   Then, in Saturday's second round of the Big East Tournament, Stringer's ninth-seeded team blew an eleven-point lead in the first half and a five-point lead in the final five minutes to lose 42-39 to number-nine seed USF.  Rutgers accomplished that by not scoring in the final 4:49, by turning the ball over 24 times and by shooting only 7-19 from the line.  So, the Scarlet Knights punctuate a 16-14 season with a horrible performance at the XL Center...hopefully ending any speculation that RU still should sneak into the NCAA Tournament with an At-Large bid when the field is announced a week from Monday.  In fact, any talk of going to the WNIT, which Stringer has always deemed beneath her once-proud program, should be dismissed because the sooner this season is slammed shut, the sooner Stringer and Athletic Director Tim Pernetti can start looking ahead to the future...and whether it will include the Hall of Fame head coach.  More on that later when the end of the season becomes official.  But one parting shot for now---in no way, shape or form should Stringer's 900th win a couple of weeks ago factor into how people feel about the future of the Scarlet Knights' program.  The #900 is all about Stringer and her past; it has nothing to do with how Pernetti perceives the next season or two and the move into the Big Ten in 2014-2015.

@Don Rich Looks like we are stuck with CVS for next season since she has contract thru June 2014. As fan I am still waitting for apology when she called all crazies. Players were thrown under the bus (can't dribble left right) and only person she was interested in was Pernetti. I am not renewing my season tickets! Watch the other teams in the top 25 and compare them to RU. What do you notice?

Why are there so many turnovers? And what happened at the foul line? Embarrassing.
