Central Jersey High School Basketball

St. Joseph of Metuchen becomes the first Central Jersey team to win the Tournament of Champions, hanging on to beat Newark Eastside 49-47 on WCTC!

The St. Joseph of Metuchen High School Basketball team's season came down to eight seconds.  Leading by two with eight seconds to go, a Newark Eastside three at the buzzer was off the mark, and the Falcons hung on to win their first-ever Tournament of Champions title, 49-47 as heard on 1450 WCTC and wctcam.com.  St. Joe's also becomes the first boys' team from Central Jersey to win a TOC crown, joining the 1989 Hoffman and 1992 St. Peter's (New Brunswick) girls.
A look at the box score would not have indicated a Falcons' win.  Kentucky-bound McDonald's All-American and two-time Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year Karl Towns was held to just eight points - his first single-digit scoring output all season - and the team committed 25 turnovers.  Fueled by a strong first quarter, St. Joe's, however, had just enough to finish, winning the title in their third trip to the TOC in as many years, and second straight appearance in the finals.  The Falcons finish the year 30-2, with the 30 wins representing a school record.
Stay tuned to 1450 WCTC and wctcam.com Wednesday morning at 6:33, when we'll reveal our final Top Ten of the season.
