Thanks to a run to the Tournament of Champions final - the first-ever by a boys' basketball team from Middlesex or Somerset Counties - St. Joseph of Metuchen has finished 2013 as the unanimous Number One in WCTC's Top Ten. The Falcons were second in all seven prior weeks, right behind East Brunswick. That's because the Bears won both regular season matchups. But after the final poll of the regular season, St. Joseph beat EB in double overtime in the GMC Tournament final, and went further in the state tournament than the Bears, which won the Central Jersey Group 4 title. St. Joseph won the GMC Tournament for the fourth year in a row - tying a mark set in the 1970s by Perth Amboy - as well as both the Non-Public South B sectional title and the Non-Public Group B title for the second straight season. Following is the final 2013 WCTC Top Ten, with teams followed by first-place votes, then final record and previous rank in parenthesis:
1. St. Joseph-3 (27-5, 2); 2. East Brunswick (26-4, 1); 3. Ridge (27-2, 3); 4. Bound Brook (26-3, 4); 5. Gill St. Bernard's (19-8, 5); 6. North Brunswick (20-7, 7); 7. Woodbridge (22-5, 8); 8. Hillsborough (21-6, 6); 9. Carteret (20-8, 9); 10t. Spotswood (21-8, 10); 10t. Bridgewater-Raritan (19-9, NR).
