The DEP approves Sandy buyouts of homes in Woodbridge

Officials at the state DEP have announced their approval of the purchase of nearly 200 homes in Woodbridge under the Superstorm Sandy Blue Acres program.  It's goal is to buy homes ravaged by floodwaters from Sandy - and other storms - to create a natural buffer, and protection against future storms.  The first home to close in Woodbridge was on Crampton Avenue for $228,000.  All the homes are bought at pre-Sandy market value based on an independent appraisal.   So far, 151 have been officially purchased -- and 48 demolished -- statewide.  None of those are in Monmouth or Ocean counties, the hardest hit by Sandy.  The state says coastal communities there haven't expressed a serious interest in participating.
