What is going on with the Rutgers basketball teams? The Scarlet Knight men and women have combined to lose nine straight games, all in the Big East. It's the longest simultaneous stretch of bad basketball in my recent memory. And, to make matters worse, neither team can score the ball. During the men's current four-game losing streak, they've scored no more than 67 points in any contest. And during the women's current five-game losing binge, they've scored no more than 52 points in any contest! What has happened to the heralded recruiting classes for both programs? Why can't they (along with the veterans) put the ball in the hole. Just based on talent, you should be scoring more than 67 or 52 points in at least one of those games. Well, to be honest, it comes down to one of two things. Either the recruiting classes were overhyped or ...

Super Bowl 46 is Super Bowl 42 redux. 2012 is 2008 all over again. The '12 Giants have completed a remarkable season that's a mirror image of '08. Just like four years ago, the Giants have come from behind in the fourth quarter to beat the favored New England Patriots 21-17 using virtually the same script. Big Blue got the ball on the eleven-yard line with about four minutes left and playing the role of David Tyree this time around and making a miraculous catch was Mario Manningham who caught a 39-yard pass from Eli Manning up against the sidelines by keeping two feet in bounds with two Patriots on top of him. That put the Giants in a confident position to move the ball down the field for a possible game-winning field goal. But they took it all the way downfield for a game-winning TOUCHDOWN run by ...

Here's the bottom line:

No, Rutgers Athletics Director Tim Pernetti didn't go the national route in his search for a new Scarlet Knight football coach. Instead, he went with a disciple of Greg Schiano to keep the program going in the direction that the former head coach had set for eleven years before heading to the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. First, Pernetti went for an early lieutenant in the Schiano regime, Mario Cristobal, who turned down an offer from Pernetti to stay as the head coach at Florida International. Then, Pernetti quickly turned to RU offensive line coach and assistant head coach Kyle Flood, the man he had named as interim head coach just last Thursday when Schiano suddenly bolted for the pros. At first glance, Flood, who has never been a head coach in his 19-year career, seems like a safe and less-then-inspired pick. But on a closer look, the selection of Flood is ...

In this age of media leaks, immediate "news" on blogs and Tweets, and thousands of web sites dedicated to college football, it was shocking to hear that Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano was leaving the school to become the head coach of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I can never remember such a huge story having no foreshadowing whatsoever. With that said, it's a very interesting move by Schiano. Sources say, besides being intrigued by becoming a pro head coach, Schiano also was concerned about the uncertainty of the newly-expanded, far-flung and, according to some, the ill-conceived way the Big East has been put together, as well as speculation that the league could be losing its coveted automatic BCS berth in a couple of years. I believe that. And I also doubt the theory that Schiano now feels he's taken the RU program as far as he can. Division-One ...
